Sadiya, one of the Sub-Division of Tinsukia District is a historically important place located on the extremely North-Eastern corner of Assam. It is geographically isolated by many rivers i.e. the mighty Brahmaputra, the Lohit and the river Dibang. The picturesque view of old Sadiya under the British was destroyed by the flood and the devastating great earthquake of 1950. People of the State can never forget the past glory of the locality even today. The entire arear has been connected with two contagious districts of Arunachal Pradesh i.e. Lohit and Lower Dibang Valley districts. Societies have been deprived in may aspects for communication gaps during the last half a century. After the newly constructed Dhola – Sadiya bridge, longest in the continent, over the river Brahmaputra, the communication gap is mitigated recently. We hope this communication development will have to bring far reaching effect in the Socio-economic and academic lives of the region.

There was not a single institution for Higher Education in the Sub- Division up to 1982. Most of the population of the locality are cultivators and only a few of them could send their children out of the locality for pursuing Higher Education by crossing the river Brahmaputra. It was not affordable for all meritorious students because of poor economic condition. So the dreams of Higher Education had been nipped in the bud after completion of their school education. Under such circumstances some farsighted citizens decided to setup a degree college at Chapakhowa through a historic resolution adopted in the meeting held in the first part of August, 1982 at Sadiya Govt. HS School. As a result Sadiya College was established at the Centre point of Chapakhowa Town on 6th September,1982 for materializing the dream about Higher Education. In the beginning Higher Secondary courses both in the Arts and Commerce Stream were started with great responsibility. Similarly three year degree course in the Arts was also started in 1985 as per requirement of existing students of the Institution. After few years of enthusiastic performance and dedicated services of the teaching and non-teaching staffs the college was brought under the Deficit-Grant-in-Aid system by the Govt. of Assam in 1989 as a mark of respect and recognition of Sacrifices made by the people both inside and outside the Sub-Division. The inexhaustible patience and able guidance of the founder Principal Mr. Kirti Chandra Phukan in this case is really praiseworthy.

There are facilities for pursuing HS courses (Arts & Commerce) recognized by A.H.S.E.C and three years degree courses both Arts and Commerce affiliated to Dibrugarh University including Honours in Assamese, Economics, History, Sociology and Political Science.

Thus the process of translating the objective into reality has been continued to meet the expectation of the locality through the institution. But still there is long way to proceed ahead. Last but not the least the authority expects wholehearted support from the students, teachers and well wishers for all round development of the college.
